What is Human Dignity?
I agree with some in saying that the basis of human dignity is the inherent worth and value of a person. Where does this worth or value come from? I believe it comes from each of us being created in the image of God. This is a belief held by others including the founding fathers of our great nation. The Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This quote further expounds on the idea of human dignity as it not only addresses a person's worth or value but how they should be treated in light of the fact that they have such. Many individuals, organizations, websites, etc. exist to advocate for this very thing, the rights that individuals have and the standard on which they should be treated.
Considering these things, I think my general definition of human dignity is a person's inherent worth and value and the rights and standard of treatment associated with this.
